💸 How to Find the Right Niche for Your Ecommerce Store

A guide to finding your niche

What is a niche?

Let’s just get the basics out of the way first. Put simply, your niche is slice of a larger audience with shared interests, needs, or problems. Instead of selling to everyone, you can just sell to this specific someone. Pet owners, Boxing Fans, Solo travellers for example.

Why niche down?

If you spend your time trying to serve everyone you will normally end up serving no one. Focusing on a niche ensures you can:

  • Tailor your product selection

  • Speak your customer’s language

  • Solve your customer’s problems

  • Build trust quickly

How to Find Your Niche

  1. Start with what you know

Start out by listing some of your interests, hobbies, communities you’re a part of. Is there a way you can leverage your existing knowledge of these communities?

  1. Explore demand

Tools like google trends can help you see if your niche is growing or if the interest in it is steady. If a niche is flatlining or spiking it’s a fad or it’s dying, probably time to reconsider.

  1. Size The Market

Google Keyword Planner can be used to see how many people are searching for your idea and how much competition there is.

  1. Find Your Competition

Find 3-4 in your niche and make a note of what they’re doing well, what customers are complaining about, and what you can do better. If you have no competition that could be a sign that your niche isn’t popular enough.

  1. Test Your Niche

Create a landing page, add some products, and run a small campaign. Try out some other low spend marketing options before you start spending big bucks, then use this insight to tweak your approach.

  1. Define Your USP

What makes your store stand out within the niche you’ve chosen? Premium quality? Unique designs? Faster delivery? A cause?

Niche Store Examples:

  • Bee’s Wrap - Reusable beeswax food wraps that replace plastic wrap. Their niche: eco-conscious home cooks.

  • WP Standard - Premium leather bags and accessories. Their angle: timeless design and craftsmanship.

  • Meowingtons - Apparel and gifts for cat lovers. Their audience: proud cat parents who want everything feline-themed.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Chasing Fads - Just because something is trendy, doesn’t mean it is

  • Skipping Research - Always check demand, keywords, and competition.

  • Going Too Broad - “Fashion” is too vague. “Men’s Old Money Fashion” is better.

  • Overcommitting - Validate before scaling. A small test can save you thousands.

  • Evolving Audience - Your niche may change over time. Stay flexible.

Tools and Exercises to Help Find Your Niche

  • Mind Mapping - Miro is an excellent choice for mind mapping your side hustle niche.

  • Trend Check - Google Trends can help keep you up to date with the latest trends.

  • .Competition Tracker - EverBee can be used to research your competition and new products.

  • Customer Research - GummySearch is great for conducting customer research on reddit.

  • Validation Checklist - SellTrend can help you validate your product ideas and then once you have them, Shopify is a great choice for building your website.
